Paul and Jennie were startled when the bright construction light shut off.

“Jennie, just stay right here. I’ll go out and check the generator.”

Jennie watched as Paul left through the back door. She was in the old kitchen. In the dim light she could see there had been some remodeling done. But the appliances were ill-fitted to what looked like the original cabinets.

To think, this is where her grandmother ran around as a young girl. She closed her eyes again. She wished for a sense of the two boys, Theodore and George who grew up here to come to her. She’d come so far. And now she stood on the very floorboards her family had stood on.

She opened her eyes, reaching to run her hands over the cabinets. They’d touched these very surfaces. Maybe poured a glass of milk on this counter.

She heard movement overhead.

“Emma? Lillia?” No one answered.

“Girls?”

Where had they gone?

“Just stay where you are! Lights will be back on soon.”
